The 3 time World Poker Champ was born in New York in ‘53 and began wagering poker before becomming a teenager.
The young bettor started out wagering gin and at the age of 10 had won his 1st gin rummy tournament, while on holiday with his parents. By the time he turned fourteen the little poker genius had become a pro and dropped out of school.
In 1954 Stu Ungar entered the history books by winning 10 grand in a gin rummy tournament without dropping a single hand, a record which still stands in New York today.
The fast speaking wiz kid has been likened, in poker terms, to athletic superstars such as Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. Stu had a true talent for playing poker but despite his successes in Texas hold’em poker, he favored wagering gin.
Stu once said that there might a number of day be a far better No Limit Texas hold’em player than him except he could not see how anyone could ever be a much better gin player.
In 1980 Stu was put on the global map as one of the greatest Texas holdem Poker players in the globe when he was crowned World Poker Champ for the very first time. Amazingly it was the 1st time he had entered the tournament.
